Cross Country Presentation & Curry Night – 8th April 2014
I have provisionally booked a table for twenty people at Bangla Lounge Halesowen on Tuesday 8th April for 8.30 pm. I have attached the menu so that members can choose their food order beforehand. This will enable us to eat at around 8.45pm – 9pm, instead of 10pm + as it was last year. Anyone interested should email me with their complete food order, which I will then pass on to the restaurant. I will be asking for a £5 deposit from members to ensure some commitment, and will let members know when this is required by.

Perry Barr Dog Racing – 21st Feb 2014
As you know I have recently taken on the role of social secretary for Cobra, giving Steve Amos a well deserved rest. Hopefully, I can do as good a job of this as he has done. Anyway, after quietly canvassing opinion on social events the last couple of months, I now have a few ideas for social events for the coming year. Some of which are a bit different, but hopefully exciting/interesting enough for some of you to give it a go – don’t worry nothing too dangerous. I think that the first two events are sorted; The first, and my inaugural event as social sec’ is a night at Perry Barr dog track on Fri 21st February. I had to pick this date around my own calendar first of all, but thought that a Friday would be better for all anyway, as most of us tend to do something on Sunday mornings. Also because the second event is going to be the regular curry night at Bangla Lounge in Halesowen, in April – more details on this at a later date. I have managed to secure 20 places for the Dog racing, and transport from – and back to – HLC, for £14 per person. This includes entry, race programme, an alcoholic drink, and a burger. We would probably need to leave HLC at around 6pm – 6.30pm but I will confirm this at a later date. Anyway, all the details are on the attached flyer, but, please drop me an email if you have any queries,
P.S. I need deposits asap to secure places – £5 deposit per person.

Boxing Day Run 2013
On a cold, brisk morning, twenty Cobra runners braved icy roads to meet at Walton Hill for the annual Boxing Day run. Climbing Walton Hill to Mark’s bench (photo by Alan Davies) and then on to the trig point, runners negotiated the muddy path to the Welsh Stone and then the hollow way which was more like a river following the heavy rain. Upwards to Walton Pool and then back up to the trig point before returning to the car park it was as always a tough run but worth doing to ‘blow the cobwebs away’.

Christmas Cobra outing.
Following a re-think regarding the proposed Cobra outing over Christmas to do the Yorkshire 3 peaks route, I have come up with a shorter alternative. 11 miles over the Long Mynd in Shropshire, following the ‘Long Mynd valleys’ race route. It’s quite a tough route, but, with some effort, it is very do-able, and if the weather is good we will get some fantastic views, and some great running. Anyone interested should come prepared with full body cover, food, and drink, and suitable fell or trail shoes. Expect to get wet, muddy, and sweaty. If we could all meet in Church Stretton for about 8.45am on the chosen day, we should be finished for about 1pm ish in time for a drink at the pub. I’m trying to keep the date a bit flexible due to weather conditions, but proposed dates so far are; 27th, 28th 30th and maybe 31st Dec. It would be good if anyone interested could email me on firstname.lastname@example.org to let me know, along with dates that they could make. As for the Y3P, it’s still on, but I think we need to come up with a more suitable date that suits everyone interested – one for 2013 I think.
Cobra Big Bash – Saturday 16 June 2012.
Founded back in 1991 by Clive Murch, John Lloyd and John Ashton, the Cobra Running and Triathlon Club celebrated its 21st Birthday on 16 June 2012. To mark the occasion, a “Big Birthday Bash” was held at St Kenelm’s Church Hall in Romsley for all Cobra members and their guests. We were delighted that all three of the founder members and their partners were able to join us at the event.
The evening provided a great opportunity for both longstanding and new members to get together, share food and drinks and to reflect on their training and running experiences whilst being members of the club. From the start, the room was filled with the buzz of lively conversation and gave the promise of being a great night of celebration. Raffle prizes were drawn (images of Steve Fletcher wearing the “booby prize” mask of The Queen will remain with many for quite a while I would imagine!), games were played and lots of energetic dancing ensued as the evening progressed. A fitting way to mark a landmark birthday! Thanks to all who attended and for supporting the club so enthusiastically.
On behalf of all Cobra members, we would like to thank our founder members for their inspiration and drive to set up the club, and for their unfailing interest and enthusiasm for club activities to the present day. Thanks too to all our Committee Members who give tirelessly and freely of their time and energy to ensure that Cobra remains the vibrant, relevant and sociable club that it is today. Long may it continue…
Day out in the Lake District – NEW DATE
One of our members is organising a run/walk in the Lake District on 14th July 2012, this is not a Cobra event so you will take part at your own risk, click here for more details or speak to Julian Hart at one of the training sessions.
It was suggested that maybe I should suggest a ‘kit list’ for this Lake District trip. I kind of assumed that anyone interested would have some idea of what to take, but, maybe not. So here goes:
Anyone interested should carry/wear with them on the run the following, as a minimum;
- Suitable trail/fell shoes – terrain is rocky/muddy/grassy/steep etc etc
- Full body and leg cover – waterproof/showerproof top, Ronhill leggings or similar
- Hat and Gloves
- Energy food
Weather in the Lake District is typically changeable, so, it may look fine when stood in the car park, but, 800m up on the summits it is usually quite different.
Obviously, if people wish to bring more stuff then that’s fine, but just remember, the more you bring the more you have to carry. I will be carrying a small first aid kit, map, compass etc, but it would be good if we had one or two members with these essentials (assuming I do get some interest of course).

Please bring food and drink and some ground blankets to sit on. We will check the weather on Tuesday and will announce then if we have to change the plan.
Skittles Evening 8th July 2011
Please let Steve Amos know if you would like to attend the Skittles Evening on Friday 8th July 2011 at the Fountain Inn, Clent (arrive at 7:15 pm for a 7:30 pm start). £12.95 per person; we need a minimum of 30 people to cover costs (maximum 50). The menu is posted on the notice board at Halesowen Leisure Centre but I will send you a copy of this at a later date; Steve would like to have your choices of food. The food is always very good at the Fountain and, as always, this is sure to be a very good night’s entertainment.
